Streamlining Recovery After a Pipe Bursts in the Home

When considering the various types of water damage, none of them seem like a favorable scenario—but when it comes to a burst pipe, it can be extra difficult to handle. Pipes discharge a high volume of water into an area, leading to full saturation if it is not handled quickly.
While it is impossible to predict if or when this might occur, knowing what to do in case it does is key. Annually, there will be one in 50 households that have some sort of water damage in them, and recovery tends to be much easier for those who already know exactly what to do.
A Guide to What to Do If a Pipe Bursts in Your Home
Shut off your water main. Pipes will continue to pump water after bursting, which can lead to an area becoming fully saturated. Being able to shut off your home’s water main quickly can stop the water from pouring in and prevent an area from becoming oversaturated.
Shut off your electricity. It is always good to keep water and electricity separated, so if it is safe to do so, cutting off your home’s electricity from the breaker box can prevent further issues from arising such as shock and fire risks.
Contact your restoration company. Being able to call your restoration company immediately after discovering damage is a great way to expedite the recovery process, so we always recommend choosing the one in advance so you know who to call.
Take a record of the damages. Keeping good records will help you all throughout the recovery process, especially if you are able to file an insurance claim. Taking photos, videos and keeping a list will help you stay organized and ensure nothing is forgotten.
Contact your insurance company. All insurance companies and insurance policies vary with how they handle water damage, so getting into contact with your provider quickly will help you figure out the next steps towards filing a claim.
Open windows and doors if possible. Speeding the drying and evaporation process is key to reducing the overall damages, so if it is safe to do so, open up the doors and windows near the area so you can increase airflow while you await assistance.
